St. Patrick’s S.N.S. has been involved in the Green-Schools programme since 2003. Green-Schools is the Irish branch of an international environmental education programme and award scheme known as Eco-Schools. It is designed to raise students’ awareness of environmental and sustainable development issues.
In order to earn a Green flag, a school must form a Green-schools committee and work on a particular theme for two years. Our committee is made up of student representatives from each class, two teachers and our caretaker. The committee must complete seven steps, submit an application and receive an assessment visit before a flag is awarded. So far, our school has been awarded with five green flags: Litter and waste; energy; water; travel and biodiversity. We are currently working towards a maintenance flag: Global Citizenship – Litter and Waste. This theme is concerned with creating understanding about the link between environmental
degradation and human rights. Students will learn about sustainable
development and about how acting locally can create a more equitable world for all. More information can be found on the Green-Schools Ireland website

Step 1: Green-school Committee
The Green-school committee is the driving force behind the programme, making sure that all 7 steps are carried out. Our committee is made up staff and pupil representatives. Our pupils are passionate about environmental justice.
Step 2: Environmental Review
This step allows us to assess how our school is doing and to identify targets for improvement. For the Global Citizenship – Litter and Waste theme we are required to:
1. Conduct a Litter and Waste Audit
2. Conduct a Global Citizenship awareness survey
3. Research Nationalities in the school
